Informing Curious Minds on Life's Questions.

A tale of two terrorists

In recent news, The United HealthCare CEO was shot and killed while walking to his hotel. This killing was not random. It was carefully orchestrated and the perpetrator, seemed, to want to deliver a message.

Investigators later uncovered the killers manifesto, where he criticized the healthcare system, calling them “parasites” and that they only care for profits.

The suspected killer on trial, Luigi Mangione, when identified as a suspect became an instant internet sensation. Everyone on social media talked about how his good-looks. They talked about he was smart. and that he attended an Ivy league school. Had a lot of friends. Was valedictorian of his high school class. He had 6-pack abs. girl loved him. He was the sweetest guy. He was always there for you. You can always count on him. He was mysterious. He and his asian friend went and got ice cream late in the night etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Compare this killer with the Unabomber. The Unabomber, from 1978–1995 would mail homemade bombs to univerisities and airlines, and computer stores.

He also had written a manifesto. He criticized capitalism and technology. He called for people to reject technology, stating that it made life unfulfilling. it leads to depression, feelings of powerlessness, and a lack of genuine community. He concluded by calling for everyone to reject technology.

When it was discovered who the Unabomber actually was. He was labeled as… someone crazy. A madman. A recluse. A terrorist. A diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. (He was diagnosed after he was caught. He was urged to plead the insanity defense because prosecutors wanted to give him the death penalty but he refused to. He wanted to make it clear that he believed he was perfectly healthy. The psych evaluations have been criticized by many.)

The media in both Mangione’s and the Unabomber’s case were hesitant to release the manifesto. They did not want it to influence others to do things similar. Understandable.

It was not widely publicized that the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, also attended an Ivy League school. He graduated Harvard at the age of 20, meaning he enrolled at 16-years old. He was a math savant. He skipped grades. He was a leader amongst his peer in his early years. He became the youngest assistant professor at UC Berkely where he taught Mathematics. he came from a good family where their parents “sacrificed everything for their children.”

Why was this information not publicized, like in Mangione’s case?
